Beyond Textbooks ...

It has been the constant endeavour of the school to emphasize the all round development of its students. To compliment academics, the school arranges for lectures, demonstrations, activity workshops on various topics by well experts. As a run-up to the book exhibition, there was a month long series events held for all classes from Jr.Kg. to 12 std.

Magic Show
The Malhar Hall at school resounded with the shouts of glee, laughter and huge shouts of “WOW”. The event was a magic show and Jugglery show for the children of JR. KG. & SR.KG. held on 20-8-2010. The Magician Mr. Ehsaan from Skyraise charmed the children by producing bunches of flowers, ribbons from his hat. He also taught a magic trick to the children who enjoyed it hugely. The Juggler, wearing a colourful costume entertained the children by juggling while riding a monocycle. The event was a great success with the children.

Theatre Activity
The Darpan Theatre group conducted an activity for the students of Std. 3 and 4.
The Darpan Theatre and Cine Arts group is a group of creative people working positively for theatre arts and actively involved in cine arts for the last 12 years. Their main objective is to encourage new talents in the field of stage and cinema.

They demonstrated various expressions like laughter, anger, jealousy, etc. by interactive methods. Children were called up to the stage to show various expressions. A small skit was also enacted by them. Acting as an art form is not only entertaining but is also a form of communicating effectively. This was brought out through this workshop. The children enjoyed the workshop immensely.

Amarchitra Katha Workshop
Amar Chitra Katha conducted a workshop for children of std 5, 6 with a new set of heroes; all ready to take the children back into history and enable them to discover the Hero within.
Amar Chitra Katha, founded in 1967, has played a vital part during the formative years of generations of Indians. It was ACK – Amar Chitra Katha – that first gave them a glimpse of their glorious heritage.

This programme aimed to:
1. Encourage reading habits
2. Provide a glimpse into our rich cultural heritage
3. Make history relevant and interesting
4. Build core values
5. Improve self concept

Through stories of various heroes like Razia Sultan, Ashoka, Rabindranath Tagore, Jawaharlal Nehru and Bhagat Singh, children were taught about a slice of Indian History. This was a novel method of making history interesting for the children.

History of Mumbai
An interesting workshop on the ‘History of Mumbai’ was held for the children of std 6th on 11th Aug 2010.The workshop was conducted by Ms. Sudipta Dhruva of The Ideas Box.

The Ideas Box is a content and activation company in the space of children and families. It is a part of the Amar Chitra Katha Media GroupThe company focuses on fiction and non fiction television shows, educational programs, large scale school contact programs, children’s events and films.

Ms. Anusree Bonnerjee performed a beautiful dance to the recitation of a poem by Sudipta Dhruva. Later Prateek Dhruva conducted an interactive session with the students.The different monuments of Mumbai were depicted through slides and a quiz was also conducted by Prateek. It was amazing to see the enthusiasm with which children participated in the quiz and heartening to see the correct answers they gave.

The feedback from children was very positive about the workshop.

A Lecture on Motivation
Special educator & Counsellor Mr. Richard Samuel. gave a presentation cum lecture on motivation for the students of std. 7th on 9th Aug 2010. Students sat in rapt attention as Mr. Richard explained motivation through the allegorical story of “The Boy and the Apple Tree”. Presentations such as these help children grasp abstract concepts of motivation easily.

Amazing India
A novel presentation was given by Mr. Amit and Mrs. Anita Vaccharajani for the students of Std.8 on 30th August, 2010. They are the authors of the book ‘Amazing India’. Instead of a normal book reading, the authors explained the whole process of making the book. From ideating to page layouts to binding and cover, all the activities associated with the making of a book were gone through in a systematic manner. The budding authors in the audience were thrilled!
