Innovative Practices at School ...
Empowering scientists of tomorrow
‘Science is best understood when you get hands-on experience.’
‘Making Science Make sense’ is a science based annual event for the students of class V and VI. The event is a combination of hands-on activities, live demonstrations, experiments and interactive sessions. It serves as an apt arena for students to experiment, experience and explore science. This year the workshop was conducted on 10th,11th,17th and 18th Jan.
Experiments conducted:
Std. V- Electromagnet, Slime, Periscope and Magnetic Levitation.
Std. VI- Trebuchet, Hydraulic Jack, Electroscope and a demonstration on
switching
action.
Learning Experience:
1.
Students were introduced to molecular structures and chain polymers with the use of innocuous chemicals.
2.
Students learnt about properties of electricity, creating a complete circuit and magnetic induction. They also learnt about hydraulic pressure, lift mechanism, compressible and uncompressible fluid, properties of light and reflection of light.
3.
Students learnt the working of simple machines (lever, see-saw), weight, counter weight, force, centripetal force, acceleration and projectile motion.
4.
Students learnt about the fundamentals of static electricity, law of electrical charge, types of force, electrostatic force, charged and uncharged body.
5.
Students learnt about magnetic properties, types of magnets, magnetic pole, magnetic levitation, magnetic field and equilibrium.

Journey to ARC "Changing the way we learn"
"ARC"- Animated Research in Computers launched the first Animated Text Book (ATB) on 22nd September 2009. Our Principal, Mrs. Revathi Srinivasan launched the Animated Text Book and addressed the ARC team and appreciated them for the painstaking efforts taken to compile the virtual text book. Our teachers Mr. Milind Gaikwad and Ms. Nagasri Prasanna were predominantly involved in the entire process, right from the inception to the launch. Below is a synopsis of their seamless and interesting journey from conceptualization of the ATB to the final end product! So here we go
Conception : The presentations on Computer based Learning provided an audio visual exposure during the Symposium held for teachers in our school and became the doorway to the inception of development of the Animated Text Book (ATB) under the banner of ARC - Animated Research in Computers.
Inspiration : Principal Madam had envisaged and conceptualized the idea of Animated Text Book (ATB). She has designed and guided us at every stage to convert the Vision set by her into a Mission. She has been a great source of encouragement and motivator at every stage of development of this idea.
There were persistent brainstorming sessions with her regarding how the final product should be. Keeping in mind the end user, constant modifications were done to suit the needs of the user and finally the product was launched on the 22nd of September 2009.
Challenges : A portal like the common web portal was made initially and an effort was made to link the various softwares to give the effect of a text book which had hassles because linking the different softwares was not compatible. Also there was a problem of attaching the sounds. This needed research and development and finally we had appropriate audio software which gave the results we desired.
A Research Team was formulated to look into the in-depth understanding of different softwares and content development. There was also a debate on choosing the right software as we had worked on two softwares and finally power point was chosen because of its generic nature and easy accessibility. A lot of research work went into power point also for including all the features that were decided upon.
Mentor : Our Principal has been our mentor at every juncture of development, encouraging and guiding us, giving us the time for our efforts. Her suggestions in our endeavour were invaluable to us.
Our Goal : Our MISSION - "Changing the way we learn" - is to develop an Animated Text Book (ATB) to make learning more relevant and interesting with explanative illustrations, related power points and videos
